The tale of Dato' Seri Najib Razak’s political downfall, along with that of his party, UMNO, and his corruption convictions, stands as a defining chapter in Malaysia’s fight against high-level graft.

From the outset, it was the relentless pursuit of justice, spearheaded by Tun Mahathir Mohamad during his second stint as Prime Minister, that set the wheels in motion. Mahathir's unflinching resolve and reliance on investigative journalism were pivotal in unearthing the 1MDB scandal, one of the world’s largest financial fraud cases.

It was Mahathir’s courage and political will that facilitated an environment where the long-hidden secrets of 1MDB were brought into the public domain. Journalistic efforts, particularly from platforms like Sarawak Report, The Wall Street Journal and The Edge, provided the leads necessary to expose the web of corruption. By leveraging these revelations, Mahathir ensured the machinery of the state was aligned to uncover the truth, leading to Najib’s eventual conviction on charges including abuse of power and money laundering.

Now, the question looms large: will Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the current Prime Minister, display the same tenacity in investigating Mahathir himself? Allegations of financial impropriety and nepotism have long shadowed Mahathir’s tenure as Prime Minister, particularly during his first term. Critics argue that the concentration of power under his administration facilitated opaque dealings, including questionable privatization initiatives and alleged favoritism toward cronies.

Anwar faces a dilemma fraught with political risks and moral imperatives. On one hand, delving into Mahathir’s legacy could unveil uncomfortable truths and set a precedent for impartial justice. On the other hand, it risks alienating powerful political factions and reopening old wounds in Malaysia’s fractious political landscape.

For Anwar to pursue such a course, he must embody the very principles he espouses: transparency, accountability, and fairness. The Malaysian public, weary of selective justice, demands a leader who will act without fear or favor, irrespective of political alliances or legacies.

The courage to pursue such an investigation would signal a new era of governance, where no individual regardless of stature is above the law.

Whether Anwar will rise to this challenge remains to be seen, but the precedent set by Mahathir in bringing Najib to justice leaves little room for excuses.
