In a surprising turn of events at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) Economic Leaders’ Week Informal Dialogue and Working Lunch, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim drew global attention by addressing the dire situation in the Gaza Strip. Anwar's impassioned speech, delivered in the presence of world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, highlighted the ongoing bloodshed caused by Israel's relentless air and ground attacks.
Expressing deep concern, Anwar condemned the unfolding humanitarian crisis, branding it as a "clear abandonment of moral responsibility" that has led to massive destruction and, alarmingly, climate calamity. The staggering toll on human lives was emphasized, with over 11,000 Palestinians, including 7,800 women and children, reported dead and 29,000 others injured. Anwar's outspoken stance positioned Malaysia on the global stage as a voice against what he deemed "blatant violations of international law."
This courageous stance, however, comes with potential risks for Anwar's government, as it introduces a new dimension to Malaysia's diplomatic relations and global standing. By openly criticizing Israel's actions and urging developed nations to take responsibility for the crisis, Anwar has set Malaysia on a path where the repercussions extend beyond the immediate situation in Gaza.
Anwar's assertion that the humanitarian crisis in Palestine will have global repercussions reflects his belief that addressing such issues requires a collective effort. In a week prior to the Apec meeting, he emphasized the urgency of tackling not only the immediate crisis but also the broader implications for international relations and the environment. In a lecture at the University of California, titled "Super Power Rivalry and Rising Tensions in the Asia Pacific," Anwar called on developed nations to play a more significant role in supporting energy transition in developing economies.
Highlighting the inadequacy of support from developed nations for energy transition in emerging economies, Anwar stressed the importance of a fair and equitable transition. He positioned Malaysia, as one of only 17 recognized mega-diverse countries, at the forefront of the global sustainability movement. However, the Prime Minister warned that climate change poses a severe risk to Malaysia, potentially displacing a quarter of its population if decisive action is not taken.
Anwar's dual focus on the Gaza crisis and climate change puts Malaysia in a delicate position, as it aligns itself with causes that may not be universally supported. While championing the fight against climate change and advocating for justice in Palestine, Malaysia risks alienating nations with differing perspectives on these issues. USA has a history of toppling governments who confront its vested interests in any manner. Ousting the heads of states, supporting and appointing puppet politicians and running everything behind the doors has been the way USA controls the developing economies. The possibility of this happening again, but now for Malaysia, can not be ignored.
The Prime Minister's call for developed nations to do more in supporting the energy transition may also strain diplomatic relations, especially if it is perceived as an indirect criticism of specific countries.
In the aftermath of his speech, Anwar commended the bilateral meeting between Biden and President Xi Jinping, emphasizing the pivotal role of China-US engagement for the future of Apec. This commendation could be seen as a strategic move to balance Malaysia's diplomatic relations, given the potential fallout from his strong stance on Gaza and climate change.
