Dr Akmal Says Non-Bumiputeras Can Get More Matriculation Spots Only if They’re Fluent in Malay

Umno Youth Chief and assemblyperson for Merlimau, Dr Akmal Saleh has never backed down from voicing his opinion on matters, regardless of how controversial his takes could be perceived by the public.

Now, the Umno Youth Chief is also voicing his opinion on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s recent announcement that all Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) top scorers, namely those with 10As and above, will be offered a spot in Matriculation starting this year. regardless of race and background.

Taking to his official Facebook page, Akmal said that he agreed with Anwar’s proposal but called for additional requirements to be enforced for the implementation of meritocracy in Matriculation.

The Merlimau assemblyperson asserted that 1 of the requirements should be that for all additional non-Bumiputera students given spots in Matriculation, the same amount should also be added to the Bumiputera quota.

Akmal elaborated,

“If the quota for non-Bumiputera students were increased by 1,000 people, the same amount must also be added to the existing Bumiputera quota,”

Akmal also wants fluency in Bahasa Melayu as a requirement for non-Bumiputeras to enter Matriculation

Besides that, the Umno Youth Chief also called for another additional requirement for allowing more non-Bumiputeras to enter Matriculation, which is that they must be fluent in Bahasa Melayu.

However, Akmal didn’t elaborate on how exactly this language requirement would be checked or enforced.
