In an effort to showcase gratitude to our firefighters, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) and its Minister, Nga Kor Ming, treated the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) personnel to Sahur (pre-dawn meal).
Taking to their Facebook page, the Ministry shared footage of the Minister pulling teh tarik, as well as cooking and serving fried kuey teow to the firefighters at 4 AM this morning (25 February).
The Ministry stated:
“KPKT Minister YB Nga Kor Ming continued the initiative of preparing food and sharing Sahur with members of the JBPM through the MADANI Sahur Stopover Programme at the Seputeh Fire Station in Kuala Lumpur.”
Divided public opinion
The gesture sparked a heated debate online. Some commenters argued that those fasting should only consume food prepared by Muslims, while others dismissed the Minister’s presence as a mere political stunt.
However, many came to his defence, suggesting there was no reason for hostility over a shared meal.
“He’s just acting to garner the attention of Muslims.”
“If it were me, I wouldn’t eat it. Sahur is an act of worship. Don’t tell me that the hands of a non-Muslim should be the ones preparing our food. Sorry if you’re offended.”
“Islam does not prohibit non-Muslims from doing nice things for Muslims. That is the beauty of Islam. There are still those who are commenting negatively; they do not know the real Islam despite being born Muslim.”
“What is wrong with you guys? The Minister is just having Sahur with firefighters, and you guys are getting angry. Those getting angry are smelly trash.”
