
A total of 1,727 voters exercised their franchise in the byelection to Ward No. 13 of the Jhajjar Municipal Council, where polling was conducted peacefully on Sunday.
The byelection was necessitated following the untimely death of ward councillor Himanshu Sharma. The BJP fielded Himanshu’s brother, Sudhanshu Sharma, as its candidate, while Vikas Gujjar, son of former councillor Virendra alias Gullu Gujjar, is contesting as an Independent candidate.
Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Swapnil Ravindra Patil visited the polling centre along with SDM Ravi Meena and ACP Anirudh Chauhan, issuing necessary directions to officials on duty. The administration remained on high alert throughout the day to ensure smooth and peaceful polling, with elaborate security arrangements in place.
To maintain law and order and closely monitor the voting process, duty magistrates and sector supervisors were appointed.
Out of a total of 2,473 eligible voters, 1,727 cast their votes at two polling booths set up at Shaheed Ramesh Kumar Government Model Sanskriti Senior Secondary School near Bhatti Gate in Jhajjar city. At Booth No. 13, 802 voters (404 men and 398 women) cast their votes, while at Booth No. 14, 925 voters (506 men and 419 women) exercised their franchise.
The district administration stated that all necessary arrangements were made for the convenience and security of voters. After the polling concluded, the EVMs were shifted to the counting centre set up at the same school. Counting of votes is scheduled for May 13, with results to be declared immediately thereafter.
The officials confirmed that the administration remained fully alert throughout the polling process and no untoward incident was reported from any part of the ward.
With the polling now over, the fate of both candidates is sealed in the EVMs until the counting day on May 13.
