The Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested a man in connection with an armed dacoity at a businessman’s residence in central Delhi’s Golf Course area. The accused has been identified as Nihal Hasan, alias Sanjay, who is a habitual offender and involved in around 20 criminal cases, the police said.

He was apprehended by the Central Range team of the Crime Branch following a brief chase in the Khajuri area on May 21. Officials said he was allegedly involved in the April 17 robbery reported at the Tughlak Road police station.

According to the police, the complainant had informed authorities that a domestic help named Sushil, who had been employed at the residence only four to five days ago, deliberately opened the main gate and allowed five to six armed accomplices to enter the house.

The accused allegedly threatened and held the businessman’s family hostage before looting jewellery, cash and other valuables from the house.

The police said three accused had already been arrested in the case, while efforts were underway to trace the remaining suspects. Officials said the Crime Branch team, led by Inspector Vinay Kumar under the supervision of ACP Satendra Mohan, tracked Nihal Hasan through technical surveillance and informer inputs. When the police attempted to apprehend him in Khajuri, he tried to flee but was caught after a chase.

During probe, the police found that the accused was allegedly involved in around 20 cases related to robbery, dacoity, theft and Arms Act violations across Delhi and adjoining areas. Officials said he had also been convicted in seven criminal cases and was last released on bail in May 2025.

The police said the gang would allegedly conduct reconnaissance of affluent residential areas and identify vulnerable targets. In the present case, the gang strategically placed a domestic servant inside the victim’s residence to gather information about valuables, family movement and security arrangements before carrying out the robbery, the police said.

As per police, the gang members entered the house armed with swords, iron rods and other weapons, assaulted family members and escaped after creating panic inside the house.
