Malaysia is a country filled with diverse race and culture. As a result of assimilation and understanding towards each other’s culture, many Malaysians are able to speak more than 1 language. Just over 2 days ago, minister of Human Resource, Steven Sim has shared an interesting encounter with an Indian man.

M’sian man who volunteers at the fire department speaks fluent Hokkien!

Watching the video for ourselves, the MP for Bukit Mertajam was seen speaking to an Indian man identified as Kumar in fluent Hokkien. Thanking Steven for sponsoring their voluntary fire department a new truck, the pair began chatting and found out that the man is actually a volunteer for the fire department.

“What do you do when you volunteer?”, asked the MP, and he replied saying that he would receive mission and calls to help out victims who are affected by floods.

Expressing his hobbies and passion, the man shared that the reason he chose to volunteer was because he really enjoys helping people. When asked if he gets paid, the man quickly clarified that it was on a volunteer basis and does not receive a salary.

“I’ve been doing this for 7 to 8 years, and we’re always looking for new volunteers”, said Kumar.

Urging young adults to join their team, Kumar mentioned that all those who join their team would be given adequate training, not only from him, but also from the fire department. Emphasizing that their organization works with the fire department in Malaysia, he hopes that through their actions, they’re able to help more Malaysians.
