10 killed as roof of cold storage collapses in India

NEW DELHI – At least 10 people were killed and 11 others injured after the roof of a cold storage facility collapsed in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said yesterday.

The incident took place on Thursday in the Chandausi area of Sambhal district, about 373km northwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

“The death toll in the roof collapse incident in Sambhal today has risen to 10,” said a senior police official, Shalabh Mathur.

“Eleven people were rescued from the site, of whom five are still under medical treatment and six have been discharged from the hospital.”

Police said three people are said to be missing, Xinhua reported.

“Rescue operation is still underway at the site,” Mathur said.

A case has been lodged against the owner of the facility, which was said to have already been in dilapidated condition.

Deadly accidents due to failing infrastructure are common in India. Construction experts blame the lax administration and corruption in India for flouting building rules that often result in using poor quality materials, inadequate supervision and poor safety standards for workers. – Bernama, March 18, 2023
