THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) said Sunday that 10 seamen arrived in the Philippines on Saturday after their vessel was struck in the Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement, the DMW said the sailors were repatriated after their vessel, the Liberian-flagged oil tanker M/V Yamilah III, was hit while sailing out of the strait.
They arrived in the Philippines aboard Emirates Airlines flight EK332 and were met by DMW-National Capital Region Assistant Regional Director Maria Theresa Sanz, representatives of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), and the medical team of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA).
The 10 seamen received assistance, including financial help from the DMW and OWWA. The MIAA medical team conducted an initial medical examination on the seamen.
Representatives of the manning agency BSM Crew Service Centre Philippines Inc. were at the airport and "provided additional assistance for their immediate needs." The DMW said the agency will give the repatriated seamen all the appropriate benefits and compensation due to them.
"Pursuant to the directive of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., the DMW once again urged all licensed manning agencies and their accredited principals to continue monitoring the safety, welfare, and conditions of Filipino seafarers," the department said.
