Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Road Transport Department (RTD) has taken action against 65 vehicles and issued 109 notices for various offences during a special operation near Sepanggar Port following a fatal accident that killed two people on recently.
Sabah RTD Director Datuk Mohd Harris Ali said a review of the accident site found the narrow road unsuitable for container loading and transfer activities, which should instead be carried out within the port or approved container depots.
He said containers parked along road shoulders and drains posed safety risks to road users and could damage road infrastructure, with the highest number of offences during the operation involving vehicles stopped in dangerous or obstructive conditions under Section 48(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
RTD statistics showed 486 notices had been issued around Jalan Sepanggar so far this year, compared with 397 in 2025, while the department would propose suitable holding areas for commercial vehicles and container handling, alongside road repairs, speed breakers, improved lighting and wider road shoulders.
Mohd Harris expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged all parties to prioritise road safety to prevent similar tragedies.
