Borneo, the third-largest island in the world, and the largest in Asia, is home to rich cultures, a diverse range of wild animals and plants, and lush rainforests.

Sarawak, the largest state in Malaysian Borneo, is known for its tribal traditions, oldest rainforests, impressive caves, and stunning beaches.

There are many places that you must visit in Sarawak, such as Bako National Park, Semnggoh Nature Reserve, Sarawak Cultural Village, Mulu National Park, wildlife sanctuaries, cultural museums, and more.

While it’s common for us to visit top attractions when visiting a new place, I recommend adding one or two stunning beaches to your itinerary.

An expert says adding a little bit of vitamin sea in the middle of your trip will give your skin an extra glow. (Find the expert below)

In this article, I’ve rounded up 11 beaches in Sarawak for you to include in your next trip to the land of hornbills (and probosci monkeys)!

2. Permai Private Beach

Located close to each other, in less than a 5-10 minute drive from Damai Beach, you’ll find Permai Private Beach, a part of the Permai Rainforest resort.

Tucked away within the Borneo rainforest at the foothills of Mount Santubong – This beach is for those who seek a calm and peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

You’ll find two beautiful beaches with breathtaking views of Mount Santubong that you can access for a small fee.

You can do a lot of activities here such as camping, trekking, guided nature walks, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, bird watching and so many more (check for fees).

If you have more time, you can book a room with the resort to experience staying in an actual tree house in the middle of the forest surrounded by lush greenery!

3. Golden Beach, Trombol

Also known as the Paradise Beach Trombol, this beach is known for its longest and widest coastlines near Kuching, located just 1 hour away.

It’s also said that this beach gives you an experience similar to Selangor’s Sky Mirror.

If you’re wondering about the name, it’s inspired by the stunning sunset views the beach offers, earning it the name, “Golden Beach.”

You can enjoy views of Mount Santubong, Mount Serapi, and the Talang Satang National Park, depending on visibility and weather conditions.

This beach is a vantage point to enjoy these natural landmarks, making it a favorite spot for nature lovers and photographers.

A unique feature of this beach is the upside-down shipwreck partially buried in the sand which is a popular photo spot for beach-goers.

You can enjoy a picnic or camp by the beach while taking in the picturesque scenery for a small fee.

Additionally, you can find other facilities available, including ATVs, huts, local snacks, and drinks, all for a small fee.

4. Sematan Palm Beach Resort

Sematan Beach is a small fishing village located at the far western tip of Sarawak facing the South China Sea. It sits close to the border between Sarawak, Malaysia, and West Kalimantan, Indonesia.

It’s a remote beach located about a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from Kuching within a resort property.

This secluded beach gives a laid-back, tranquil atmosphere making it an ideal location for relaxation and peaceful retreats.

You can do basic activities such as swimming, picnicking, kayaking, snorkeling, playing beach volleyball or soccer, taking boat trips to the nearest islands, and many more (check for fees).

Practical Information: Parking and toilet facilities are likely available at this beach as there’s a resort nearby. Check for fees.

5. Tusan Bekenu Beach/Tusan Cliff Beach

Now, I’m going to take you to the northern side of Kuching, Miri, where you will find more beautiful beaches!

Located 40- 1 hour from Miri City Center, you’ll find this famous Tusan Cliff beach known for its Blue Tears phenomenon.

Blue Tears is a phenomenon caused by algae called dinoflagellates. They emit a blue glow when disturbed, for example, the movement of the water caused by waves or other motions.

You can witness this stunning visual effect at night.

Besides, you can also witness stunning cliff views as the beach is famous for its cliffs that provide breathtaking views of the South China Sea.

This place is also famous for its iconic landmark, the Horse Head drinking water rock formation which unfortunately collapsed in 2020.

Nonetheless, you can still enjoy the stunning panoramic views of the South China Sea accompanied by lush greenery and unique rock formations.

Practical Information: Parking, toilet facilities, and food stalls are likely available at this beach.

Have you decided on your next seaside escape?

6. Bakam Beach/Hawaii Beach

Bakam Beach also famously known as Hawai’i Beach is situated 20 km drive from Miri or a 30-40 minutes drive from Tusan Cliff Beach.

The beach got its name due to the similar features of the beautiful island of Hawai’i.

The white sandy beach is surrounded by tropical palm trees swaying to the cold breeze giving you almost the exact experience of being on a Hawai’i island.

It’s a hidden spot in a small fishing village frequently visited by the locals.

If you’re a camper, you can camp here surrounded by tall and slender palm trees and watch the beautiful sunset/sunrise in the stunning blue skies.

In the mood for a barbecue? You can rent the equipment for a small fee.

Practical Information: Parking, toilet facilities, and food stalls are likely available at this beach.

Located 13km drive from the city center, this is one of the popular spots in Miri.

This stretchy coast is a perfect place for you to take a long stroll or plan a picnic with your friends and family.

There are food stalls nearby if you need something to munch while strolling.

You will find Beach Republic, a beachside recreation center located 6 minutes by car from Luak Bay Beach.

9. Brighton Beach/Tanjung Lobang Beach

Also known as Tanjung Lobang Beach, this is one of the popular and oldest beaches in Miri located 15-20 minutes from the Miri city center.

I couldn’t find how the beach got its name but it likely originated from historical British influences in the area, as similar names exist in former British territories.

If you’re coming with kids, there’s a playground available to keep them entertained.

As a bonus, this beach has 2 piers extending to the sea, where you can walk to get a perfect view of the sea and take stunning pictures for the gram!

If you get hungry looking at the breathtaking views of the stunning sea, there’s a food center for you to enjoy some of the local delights.

Practical Information: The beach offers parking and toilet facilities. Check for fees.

10. Beraya Beach

Situated 30-40km from the Miri city center in the Bekenu (Subis) district, this beach stretches approximately 3 kilometers, offering generous views of the South China Sea.

When you’re visiting Tusan Cliff Beach, be sure to also check out the nearby Beraya beach for an extra dose of “vitamin sea”!

There’s also a beach resort called Tim’s Seaside Hideout, a chalet-style accommodation overlooking the gorgeous Beraya Beach.

Practical information: Parking is available for beach-goers (check for fees). Additionally, you can also find small food stalls for local delights.

11. Tompok Beach

Last on the list is a beach located 30-40 minutes from Miri City Center and it has a rather interesting name, I must say.

Tompok means spotty/patchy in English. The beach got its name after a beloved local beach doggo.

This is so sweet!! 😭

When I first Googled this beach, I kept stumbling upon pictures of a precious doggo with spots.

Later, I managed to confirm that Tompok the Beach Doggo is indeed the MVP (Most Valuable Pupper)!

If you’re a dog lover, you’ll be thrilled to visit this beach, as you’ll get the opportunity to meet the MVP, Tompok, and the gang (yes, there are more doggos!)

Oh, I digressed, but can you blame me?

This beach offers the adorable Tompok and a peaceful retreat for you – the perfect getaway for a heartwarming escape and some pawsitivity! 🐾

There’s also a small food stall for visitors to enjoy some local delights.

So, have you met Tompok and the gang? If so, let me know in the comments!

Practical information: Although there isn’t specific information about parking or toilet facilities, you can assume that there might be parking spaces and toilets available either at the beach or in the surrounding area.
