
In a move aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness and response at the district level, the Delhi Government has appointed 12 Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) councillors as co-chairpersons of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) across the Capital.
The appointments were notified by the Delhi District Disaster Management Authority through an extraordinary gazette notification issued on June 17. The nominations have been made by Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu under Section 25 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
According to the notification, the councillors will serve as co-chairpersons of the DDMA in their respective districts, assisting in disaster management planning, coordination and response measures.
Among those appointed are Arjun Pal Singh Marwah (Lajpat Nagar) for South-East district, Suman Kumar Gupta (Chandni Chowk) for Old Delhi district, Suman Kumari (Azadpur) for North district and Manish Chadda (Paharganj) for Central district.
Veena Asija (Ashok Vihar) has been nominated for Central-North district, while Sushma Rathee (Madhu Vihar) will serve in South-West district. Yogesh (Alipur) has been appointed for Outer-North district and Ritu Goyal (Rohini-F) for North-West district.
The notification further names Brijesh Singh (Sabha Pur) for North-East district, Neelam (Azad Nagar) for East district, Dharamvir Singh (RK Puram) for South district and Shilpa Kaur (Khyala) for West district.
The District Disaster Management Authority plays a key role in preparing district-level disaster management plans, coordinating among government agencies during emergencies and ensuring implementation of disaster mitigation and preparedness measures.
The latest appointments are expected to enhance coordination between the civic body and district administrations, particularly in handling urban challenges.
