The 125-year-old “Rani Mahal” building in Jalalabad town of Fazilka district is set to be restored and converted into a public library to preserve its heritage value. The Punjab Government has decided to spend Rs 70 lakh on the project, which has been named the “Rani Mahal Public Library”. Constructed in 1901, it is located in the Gandhi Nagar locality of the town.

The restoration work will be carried out while preserving the

building’s original design and aesthetics.

Jalalabad AAP MLA Jagdeep Goldy Kamboj said that the library would be equipped with books, Wi-Fi facilities and furniture. New parks would also be developed outside.

“The project aims to transform the neglected but historically significant building into a vibrant community space and attract tourists interested in learning about the history of this border town,” said Kamboj.

He added that seating space for nearly 100 students would be provided in the library.

Although no detailed historical record of the “Rani Mahal” is available, it is believed that the building was constructed by a Nawab of the erstwhile Mamdot State, of which Jalalabad was once a part.
