A 12-year-old boy brought joy and excitement to the staff and patients of Sarawak General Hospital recently. In conjunction with the Lantern Festival, he volunteered to perform a Bian Lian (face-changing) routine that left the audience enthralled and wanting more.

The 砂州眼 Sarawak Eye Facebook page shared a video of the young performer, Jayden Chang Yu Chen, as he executed the traditional art form while interacting playfully with a hospital nurse.

“He is only 12 years old, but his performances bring the entire audience to a fever pitch, resulting in thunderous applause,” the post noted. Jayden, a Primary 6 student from SJK Chung Hua Siburan in Kuching, consistently receives a warm reception wherever he performs.

“He possesses a magical quality; many people want to see him up close and even touch his mask because he performs Sichuan face-changing, a prestigious traditional Chinese art form.”

Despite his young age, Jayden understands the importance of giving back. His schedule is often packed to the brim during the festive season, yet he prioritised bringing his expertise to the hospital wards.

“Although his performance schedule is hectic during the Lunar New Year, he still made time for charity work at Sarawak General Hospital. By performing for the hardworking medical staff, he brought them much-needed joy. He also visited the cancer ward to offer encouragement to patients, warming the community with his compassion,” 砂州眼 Sarawak Eye added.
