A TOTAL of 13,045 prohibited contents linked to fraud, gambling and services were detected on e-commerce platforms between Jan 1 and Oct 30, Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said.
The government is stepping up efforts to tackle online scams involving parcel deliveries through the launch of Parcel Shield, an initiative aimed at helping consumers recognise fraudulent tactics used by syndicates exploiting courier services and e-commerce platforms.
Fahmi explained the initiative, spearheaded by the Postal Forum, would focus on common scams such as impersonating courier companies, sending fake delivery notifications, distributing phishing links and exploiting cash-on-delivery (COD) transactions.
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would work with courier companies to intensify public awareness campaigns, including through radio and television announcements.
“The Communications Ministry and all courier companies will also expand this initiative through public service message services on radio and television to ensure that consumers, especially Malaysians, benefit from this initiative,” he said.
Fahmi was speaking at a press conference after launching Parcel Shield in conjunction with National Courier Day 2026 at the Selangor International Trade Centre today.
In a related development, Fahmi said the Cabinet had agreed in principle to amend the Postal Services Act 2012 to strengthen measures against fraudulent activities while improving the welfare and protection of courier workers.
He said the proposal had received policy-level approval, but the drafting process would take several months before the amendments could be brought to Parliament, possibly by the middle or latter part of next year.
The ministry and MCMC would invite all licensed delivery companies to take part in discussions on the proposed amendments.
The changes would also support the government’s planned Postal Fund initiative, which is expected to be launched in the first quarter of 2027, he said.
On the Melaka state election, Fahmi, who is also Pakatan Harapan communications director, said the coalition’s leadership would decide who should be its poster boy for the Nov 14 polls.
He said PH was not preoccupied with the question at this stage, as its priority was to ensure a healthy contest.
“We are taking the position that we will focus on a healthy contest, and any decision on the poster boy will be made by the leadership,” he said after officiating National Courier Day 2026.
Fahmi said he would be in Melaka tomorrow to inspect the media centre and assess preparations ahead of polling.
He also reminded political parties and their supporters not to turn the campaign into a platform for spreading false information or defamatory material against candidates.
Members of the public who come across such content on social media should report it directly to the platforms concerned, including Facebook and TikTok, as well as to MCMC, he said.
“We can also lodge complaints directly with the platforms, so make complaints to Facebook, TikTok and others. At the same time, complaints can be made to MCMC. God willing, we will monitor the situation,” he added.
Fahmi added that MCMC had inspected internet connectivity at polling centres and expected no disruption to internet access on polling day. - October 31, 2026
