KUALA LUMPUR — The move by Umno’s 14 assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan was made independently, and the party’s top leadership is to review the matter at the Supreme Council level.
Deputy Prime Minister and Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he will be meeting the assemblymen involved.
He also confirmed plans to meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss the issues surrounding the Negeri Sembilan state government crisis.
“Umno’s central leadership is aware of what they planned and what they announced. The system in Umno typically respects decisions made by the respective state liaison body or the assemblymen concerned.
“This matter will be referred to and decided upon when it is brought to the Supreme Council. All aspects will be reviewed, and the issue will be carefully examined,” he said at a press conference here today.
Zahid said this when asked about the actions of 14 Umno-Barisan Nasional (BN) state assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan who declared a loss of confidence and withdrew their support for Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun this morning.
Following that, Perikatan Nasional's (PN) five assemblymen in Negeri Sembilan announced they were ready to cooperate with the Umno assemblymen to ensure the continuity of the state government administration.
According to Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly (DUN) opposition leader Mohamad Hanifah Abu Bakar, a letter of cooperation was also submitted to the state BN, represented by State Umno Liaison Committee secretary Datuk Mustapha Nagoor.
However, Zahid today said this showed that PN was merely taking advantage of the crisis in Negeri Sembilan.
In the last state election, Pakatan Harapan won 17 seats, Umno-BN secured 14 seats, while PN obtained five seats. – April 27, 2026
