FOR one to have a driving license in Malaysia, you would need to be at least 17-years-old. But according to Free Malaysia Today, transport minister Liow Tiong Lai said in 2015 that there were around seven million unlicensed drivers on Malaysian roads. These offenders are only identified after a crash occurs.

Recently, a 14-year-old’s joyride in a car ended in a tragedy when the driver crashed into a motorcycle, killing a woman and injuring another.

According to Kota Setar acting police chief Superintendent Syed Basri Syed Ali, the accident took place near a petrol station on Jalan Kuala Kedah.

The tragedy occurred after the driver took her friend’s mothers car for a joyride. The police believed the heavy rain and the slippery road led to the teen losing control of the vehicle.

The car then swerved into the opposite lane hitting the motorcycle which the two sisters were riding. According to Berita Harian, one of the sisters, 32-year-old Nur Shafiqah Abdullah, died on the scene while her sister, 43-year-old Nooraliza Abdullah suffered multiple injuries.

The driver meanwhile escaped with injuries on her nose and investigations revealed that she is a high-school dropout as well.

Police have stated that the owner of the car, which the girl drove will also face action as she allowed a minor to drive the car.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
