140-year-old shipwreck emerges from sand after powerful nor’easter

  • Wooden wreckage uncovered on Nantucket's southern coastline following a severe nor'easter is suspected to belong to a 19th-century schooner that ran aground in 1884.
  • The Warren Sawyer, a three-masted vessel carrying scrap metal and cotton from New Orleans to Boston, sank near Miacomet Beach, though all crew members survived after being rescued from the shore.
  • Jason Graziadei, editor-in-chief of the Nantucket Current, captured video of the wooden beams and iron fastenings, marking the first time pieces of the wreck have resurfaced since early 2023.
  • State researchers from the Massachusetts Board of Underwater Archaeological Resources previously determined that similar debris found in 2022 and 2023 was most likely from the same ship.
  • Local experts noted that while further investigation is needed to confirm the match, the discovery reminds us of Nantucket's maritime history, which saw more than 700 shipwrecks in the 19th century.
