A Form Two student in Sabah died after he was accidentally shot with a homemade firearm, known as a bakakuk, while playing hide and seek with a friend in Keningau.

According to Berita Harian, the he incident occurred at around 8am yesterday at the yard of a house along Jalan Kem PPH.

Victim was hiding under the house

According to police, the victim had been hiding under the house as part of the game when the suspect, also 14, is believed to have accidentally pulled the trigger of the homemade gun, firing in the direction of the victim.

Keningau District Police Chief Superintendent Yampil Anak Garai said the suspect panicked and called for help from a villager who happened to be passing by.

The residents then rushed the boy to Hospital Keningau, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the emergency unit.

A medical examination found 14 pellet entry points on several parts of the victim’s body, including the right side of the chest, right arm, knee and left torso.

Gun belonged to suspect’s elderly father

Investigations revealed that the bakakuk had been hidden by another teenager, a 13 year old who is the younger brother of the suspect. The weapon’s owner was identified as their 70 year old father.

All three family members have been detained for further investigation. Police also seized the bakakuk, live ammunition, spent shells, the suspect’s clothing and two mobile phones.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
