A Malaysian mum lodged a police report against a teacher recently for causing injury to her son by caning him.

Her 14-year-old son was caned three times on his buttocks for wearing the wrong school uniform

The caning caused the body part to bruise and swell, leaving the teenager unable to sit.

According to the single mum, her son, who is a student at a secondary school in Bentong, Pahang, was not the only one to receive strokes of the rotan. The students had a dress code to follow, and those who did not follow the rules when attending an event at the auditorium would be punished, as told by the vice principal.

The discipline teacher “executed” the punishments where male students were caned three times, and the female students had to receive two strokes of rotan on their palms.

As for the event that took place yesterday (May 15), the mum said her son wore the school’s sportswear, and not the proper school uniform as required.

“Yes, you can punish my son, but not too harshly”

In a report by Sin Chew, the mum said she understood the need to carry out the punishment as a reminder, but she could not agree when things got too harsh that it caused injury to her son.

“I got off from work yesterday and saw my son’s injury on his buttock. I went to the police station to file a report.”

“The police also told me to get a physical examination from the hospital.”

The mum also clarified that she understands if her son had to be punished if he made a mistake, but the punishment shouldn’t be too harsh.

“This will impact the student’s physical and mental health. The school should explain the situation and apologise,” the woman said.

Spare the rod and spoil the child, or should punishments be done moderately?
