Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) has made history by having 15 of its scientists included in the world’s top two per cent researchers list for 2025, according to a prestigious international ranking published by Stanford University in collaboration with Elsevier.
The achievement spans two categories, namely 14 scientists were recognised for Single Year Citation Impact in 2024, while six made the Career-Long Citation Impact list, with some researchers appearing in both categories.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor is proud of the accomplishment, describing it as proof that a Borneo-based university can stand alongside the world’s leading research institutions.
“This achievement shows that UMS scientists can compete with the world’s best researchers, showing that knowledge and innovation from Borneo can contribute to solving global challenges,” he said.
The recognition extends beyond mere international acknowledgment, serving as a catalyst for strengthening collaborations at multiple levels, locally with Sabah communities and Malaysian agencies, regionally across Borneo with partners in Sarawak, Brunei and Kalimantan and globally with international universities and organisations.
Among those recognised for Single Year Citation Impact are Prof Dr Hanudin Amin, Dr Teo Siow Hwa, Prof Dr Jason Teo Tze Wi and Prof Dr Zainul Amiruddin Zakaria.
The Career-Long Citation Impact category includes several of the same researchers, highlighting their sustained excellence.
This milestone reinforces UMS’s reputation as Borneo’s “Brain of Borneo” underlining its mission to elevate research and innovation from the region onto the world stage.
