In a devastating escalation of the ongoing conflict in Gaza, Israel's military bombed the UN-operated al-Jaouni school in central Gaza, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least 18 people. Among the casualties were six staff members of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), including the manager of the shelter. This incident marks the highest death toll for UNRWA personnel in a single attack during the 11-month-long war, underscoring the severe impact on humanitarian efforts in the region.

Witnesses reported harrowing scenes of destruction, with accounts describing how "women and children were blown to pieces" in the assault. The attack has intensified calls for international condemnation and highlighted the urgent need for a resolution to the ongoing conflict.

In the midst of this escalating violence, there have been recent developments in diplomatic efforts. Hamas has communicated to mediators its willingness to accept a US-proposed, UN-backed truce proposal without additional conditions from any party. This potential breakthrough offers a glimmer of hope for a cessation of hostilities, though the path to sustainable peace remains fraught with challenges.

The conflict has inflicted a staggering toll on both sides. According to the latest figures, at least 41,084 people have been killed and 95,029 wounded in Israel's war on Gaza. The situation has also led to significant casualties in Israel, with at least 1,139 people dying in Hamas-led attacks since October 7 and over 200 individuals taken captive.

The ongoing violence has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis, with numerous civilians caught in the crossfire. As international bodies and leaders continue to call for restraint and renewed peace talks, the international community remains on edge, hoping for a resolution that can bring an end to the suffering and pave the way for lasting peace in the region.
