BODRUM: Eighteen migrants drowned on Wednesday after their rubber dinghy sank in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Bodrum in southwestern Turkey.
The Turkish coastguard confirmed that search and rescue operations resulted in 21 undocumented migrants being rescued alive.
Efforts to determine the status of any missing migrants and the ongoing search and rescue mission are continuing, according to a coastguard statement.
There was no immediate information available regarding the nationalities of those on board the vessel.
Such shipwrecks are common among vessels attempting the perilous crossing from Turkey to nearby Greek islands, which serve as a gateway to the European Union.
