19 incidents in 3 months involving KLIA aerotrain, says deputy minister

THE aerotrain at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 experienced 19 incidents between July 2 and Sept 30 due to various issues, including signalling problems and human-related incidents, such as passengers forcing open the train doors.

Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah said the Aerotrain project at KLIA Terminal 1 was fully completed on June 30 and began operations on July 1 and the project is now in its two-year defect liability period

"At present, the Aerotrain's mechanical and signalling systems are undergoing an early adjustment phase towards achieving full operational stability.

"Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) is working closely with the manufacturer, Alstom, to remain ready to take immediate action whenever necessary to ensure smooth operations," he told the Dewan Rakyat as reported by the New Straits Times.

He added that improvements in stability have been observed, with the Aerotrain recording 100 per cent operational service availability in recent weeks, specifically during Week 13 (Sept 28–Oct 3) and Week 14 (Oct 5–10).

As of Oct 8, he said, 5.33 million passengers had used the new Aerotrain and travelled more than 39,945km.

He added that the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is required to ensure 100 per cent tram availability for single-train operations and 99.5 per cent for dual-train operations - a very tight tolerance, as the goal is to maintain full functionality.

A penalty of up to RM190,000 per month will be imposed if the requirement is not met.

He was responding to Khairil Nizam Khirudin (PN-Jerantut), who asked about the reasons behind the KLIA Aerotrain's maintenance failures that have caused frequent breakdowns, as well as the government's immediate measures to restore smooth and safe passenger transportation at KLIA. - October 13, 2025
