A 19-year-old Malaysian male has been detained by authorities in Macau after allegedly attempting to smuggle 8.9 kilograms of cannabis into the territory. The arrest was reported by the Macau Business news portal and confirmed by local police.

The suspect was apprehended upon arrival at Macau International Airport on Thursday. According to police, the drugs were discovered during a routine inspection of his luggage, where officers found 16 packages of cannabis wrapped in aluminum foil concealed inside his bag.

“The seized drugs are estimated to be worth around MOP9 million (~RM4.7 million) on the black market.”

During questioning, the teenager reportedly confessed that he had been paid MOP9,547 (~RM5,030) by a drug syndicate to transport the illegal substances from Macau to Hong Kong. He claimed he was unaware of the full extent of the operation and was merely acting on instructions given to him by the distributor.

Part of a larger drug trafficking network

The suspect also told police that he works as a maintenance worker in Malaysia, and that this was his first time being involved in such an activity.

Authorities believe the case may be part of a larger drug trafficking network operating across borders in the region. The Office of the Public Prosecutor has launched a full investigation to trace the origin of the cannabis and identify other individuals who may be involved in the smuggling operation.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to face charges under Macau’s strict drug laws, which carry severe penalties for trafficking and possession of controlled substances.

Stay tuned for more updates.
