The timing of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) reopening the investigation into the 1BestariNet service tender, awarded to YTL Communications in 2011, raises more than a few eyebrows.

What was once thought to be buried in the dusty archives of forgotten government deals is now resurfacing, coincidentally at a time when Muhyiddin Yassin, former Prime Minister, faces scrutiny for alleged sedition over claims regarding the appointment of PMX.

The 1BestariNet project, a massive RM4 billion initiative intended to revolutionize internet access in Malaysian schools, was met with high hopes but quickly descended into controversy.

Complaints about poor performance and inefficiency led to widespread dissatisfaction, culminating in former Education Minister Mazlee Malik’s very public dismissal. Mazlee claims his refusal to extend the contract with YTL, citing the project's failure to deliver, triggered his ousting from Tun Dr. Mahathir’s Cabinet, a dismissal allegedly involving no fewer than five direct calls from the then-Prime Minister.

One can't help but wonder why this issue is being dragged back into the limelight now. Are we really to believe that this is purely about justice, or is there something more political at play?

With Muhyiddin Yassin already in the crosshairs for his remarks on the appointment of the current Prime Minister, this resurrection of the 1BestariNet saga smacks of a coordinated attempt to undermine his credibility further.

Muhyiddin, during his tenure as Prime Minister, was never known to shy away from controversy, and his political rivals likely see this as another opportunity to weaken his standing.

The investigation into the 1BestariNet project comes across as a convenient sideshow—something to deflect attention and possibly paint him in a negative light amidst his ongoing legal battles. It wouldn’t be the first time Malaysian politics has seen selective probes timed to maximise damage to political opponents.

Of course, MACC Investigation Division Senior Director, Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim, has stressed that the commission is simply doing its job under the MACC Act 2009, urging all parties to let the investigation proceed without interference.

But the public knows better. In a country where political maneuvers and corruption probes have often gone hand in hand, it’s hard to view this as anything but an orchestrated effort to hit Muhyiddin where it hurts, making sure his past comes back to haunt him at the most opportune moment for his detractors.

There’s no denying that the 1BestariNet debacle deserves scrutiny—after all, billions of ringgit were at stake, and the Malaysian public has a right to know where their money went.

However, to suddenly exhume this case now, while Muhyiddin is already under fire, reeks of political opportunism. It’s the sort of chess move we’ve come to expect in Malaysia’s political arena—one that is as much about settling scores as it is about justice.

So, while the MACC digs into old files and seizes documents, it’s crucial that Malaysians keep their eyes wide open. The return of this issue is more than just a legal matter—it’s a piece of a larger political puzzle, and one that’s meant to shape perceptions, shift narratives, and possibly, alter the political landscape ahead.

(Editorial note: "MACC stressed that the investigation is being conducted with full transparency, fairness, and professionalism, and stressed that no external parties are interfering in the investigation.)https://newswav.com/article/macc-probe-into-ytl-communications-rm4-07b-1bestarinet-project-launched-aft-A2409_4GhyRn?s=A_EedfrCD&language=en
