Kuala Lumpur: Lawyers for Najib Razak today complained to the High Court that a documentary on 1MDB currently being streamed on Netflix is prejudicial to the former prime minister in his ongoing trial.
Shafee Abdullah told Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah that the documentary, titled Man on the Run, treats Najib with extreme contempt.
Written and directed by Cassius Michael Kim, the documentary revolves around the role of fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (or Jho Low) in 1MDB. It premiered in local cinemas in October last year and can now be watched on Netflix.
Shafee said the documentary claimed that Low, “aided and abetted” by politicians, “stole” large sums of money from 1MDB.

The documentary also contained interviews with former US ambassador to Malaysia John Mallett and Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle Brown.
Shafee said he would be asking the government to demand that Netflix take down the documentary.
He said the defence team is also contemplating action against Thomas and Rewcastle Brown over their statements.
Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib said that he has yet to watch the documentary.
He said that he would seek further instructions on Shafee’s contentions and suggested that the lawyer write to the government on the matter.
