A recent High Court ruling has directed 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) to pay RM225,000 in legal costs to Riza Aziz, the stepson of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, along with his two companies. The payment follows the abrupt withdrawal of a civil lawsuit that sought to reclaim US$248 million from Riza, Red Granite Pictures Inc, and Red Granite Capital Ltd.
The decision was handed down by High Court judge Datuk Raja Ahmad Mohzanuddin Shah Raja Mohzan, marking the conclusion of a legal battle that had drawn significant public and political attention. On February 24, 1MDB’s legal representative, Rabindra S Nathan, informed the court that the company had received instructions to withdraw the case. However, no explanation was provided for this unexpected move. With no objections from the defendants, the only matter left for deliberation was the legal costs incurred.
The withdrawal of the lawsuit has fueled speculation and criticism, particularly regarding 1MDB’s legal strategy in recovering funds allegedly misappropriated in one of the world’s most infamous financial scandals. Many are questioning whether this decision aligns with the government's commitment to holding those responsible for 1MDB’s financial losses accountable.
Riza Aziz and the two Red Granite Companies he controlled, had previously been linked to the 1MDB scandal through allegations that funds linked to the sovereign wealth fund were used to finance Hollywood film, most notably The Wolf of Wall Street. The US Department of Justice had implicated the company in its extensive investigation into the billions misappropriated from 1MDB.
This latest development has reignited criticism of the Madani government’s approach to financial accountability and transparency. It may be a setback in efforts to recover stolen assets, raising concerns over whether those involved in the scandal are being held accountable. Such legal withdrawals can risk undermining public trust in the government’s pledge to pursue justice for 1MDB-related offenses.
As the dust settles on this case, questions remain over 1MDB’s broader strategy and whether other legal actions to reclaim missing funds will meet a similar fate. The decision to abandon the lawsuit, coupled with the substantial legal costs awarded to Riza Aziz, has only intensified scrutiny of Malaysia’s handling of one of its most significant financial scandals.
