A total of 2,145 individuals voluntarily sought treatment since Malaysia amended its Drug Dependants Act in August 2025, says Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution.

PUTRAJAYA: A total of 2,145 individuals have voluntarily sought treatment since amendments to the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983 (Act 283) took effect in August last year.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said of these, 1,401 individuals underwent community-based treatment, while 744 received institutional rehabilitation.

“We recorded 2,145 individuals who voluntarily sought treatment. This is an indicator of success following the amendment. We have effectively drawn those involved to come forward and surrender for treatment.

“This figure, within one year, is certainly encouraging. I believe there is still substantial room for improvement,” he told reporters at the Home Ministry’s monthly assembly here today.

Act 283 officially took effect on Aug 22, 2025, allowing for arrests, treatment access and rehabilitation for the abuse of prohibited substances beyond drugs, such as glue and ketum.

The Act expands access to treatment and rehabilitation for drug and substance dependents, in line with a public health and comprehensive recovery approach.

Saifuddin Nasution said that aside from individuals who came forward voluntarily, 23,317 persons under suspicion have also been recorded, while 1,109 ketum users have been detected.

He said the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) must continue to focus on prevention and enforcement, while strengthening treatment and rehabilitation elements in addressing drug abuse.

“I urge AADK to remain focused, especially on prevention and enforcement. Give due attention to treatment and rehabilitation elements, and do not neglect strategic cooperation with other regulatory agencies,” he said.

At the event, Saifuddin Nasution also launched the AADK Strategic Plan 2026–2030 and the AADK Drone Unit, which will further strengthen drug enforcement and prevention efforts.
