Earlier this year, two 17-year-old teenagers urinated into the hotpot in Haidilao, prompting the popular hotpot restaurant to take legal action.
On 12 September, the Huangpu District Court in Shanghai ordered the parents of two 17-year-old boys to pay CNY2.2 million (~RM1,299,540) in damages after their intoxicated sons urinated into the hotpot.
When the incident took place in March this year, many other utensils were also scattered around the table. The boys, surnamed Wu and Tang, were both detained by the local police shortly after Haidilao reported the incident to the authorities.
Parents held responsible for Haidilao’s losses
The incident, caused by the intoxicated Wu and Tang, had brought massive losses to Haidilao. The popular restaurant chain not only had to replace all cookware and tableware after the incident, but also offered full refunds and tenfold compensation to customers who dined at the restaurant in the 13 days following the incident.
The parents were held responsible for the outlet’s economic losses, which included CNY130,000 (~RM76,791) for damaged cookware and cleaning costs, CNY70,000 (~RM41,349) for legal costs, and last but not least, CNY2 million (~RM1,181,400) for business and reputational losses.
The 6 defendants, Tang, Wu, and their respective parents, were also ordered to issue public apologies in a designated newspaper while protecting the minors’ privacy.
The court ruled that the parents of Tang and Wu failed in their supervisory duties, making them liable for their sons’ actions, reported The Standard.
The video of the teens urinating into the hotpot went viral in March, which sparked major outrage among social media users.
