20 years after it first captured the imagination of Malaysian audiences, Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical has done it again.
Tickets for the highly anticipated 2026 restaging were completely sold out within just two hours of public sales opening, with more than 22,000 people still waiting in the online queue at 10pm — a remarkable indication that demand for the production extended far beyond the seats available for its current season.
The extraordinary response marks a significant moment not only for Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical, but also for Malaysian theatre and the performing arts.
For Tiara Jacquelina, director and co-creator of the original production, the response has been overwhelming and deeply humbling.
“I honestly don’t quite have the words for what happened tonight. 20 years after we first brought Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical to the stage, to know that Malaysians still hold this story so close to their hearts — and that a whole new generation wants to discover it — is incredibly moving.
“20 years ago, we dreamt that Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical might become something Malaysians would remember. Tonight, Malaysians reminded us that they never forgot.”
At 10, more than 22,000 people remained in the online queue despite tickets having sold out — a level of unfulfilled demand that Tiara believes carries significance well beyond the production itself.
“To me, this isn’t only a Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical story. It is a very encouraging sign for Malaysian theatre and for the performing arts in this country. It tells us that audiences are hungry for our stories, our performers and our own homegrown productions. I hope this gives even greater confidence to everyone who believes in and invests in the Malaysian performing arts.”
A homecoming, two decades in the making
The 2026 production marks the return of Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical to the stage after nearly two decades, bringing the celebrated Malaysian musical to a new home at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC).
Tiara paid tribute to the generations of audiences who have kept their love for Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical alive.
“My deepest gratitude goes to the fans who have carried Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical with them all these years. Some of you were there with us 20- years ago and now, you’re bringing your children to see it.
“And then there are young people discovering Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical for the very first time. That, to me, is perhaps the most beautiful part of this homecoming.”
Tiara also acknowledged JCPAC for believing in the return of the production and for helping set its new chapter in motion.
“I am enormously grateful to JCPAC for believing that this story deserved to live again on stage, and especially to Melissa Teoh, who reached out to me and really instigated this entire adventure. Without that first conversation and JCPAC’s belief in bringing Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical back for a new generation, we would not be here today.”
Now, the work begins
For Tiara and the Enfiniti creative team, however, the sell-out is not the finish line.
If anything, it raises the stakes.
“Right now, I’m trying not to be distracted by the numbers. My responsibility is very simple: We have to deliver. And not merely deliver what audiences remember or expect — we have to go beyond it.
“That has always been how I work. If people are giving us this much love and trust before they have even seen the show, then we owe them something extraordinary when those curtains open.”
The company is currently deep in rehearsals ahead of the season opening on Oct 31, 2026, with Tiara directing a new generation of performers in a reimagined staging of the beloved Malaysian musical.
And for those who couldn’t get tickets
The unprecedented demand has inevitably raised one question among the thousands of fans who were unable to secure seats: Will there be more performances of Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical?
While no additional performances have been confirmed, Tiara acknowledged the disappointment of those who waited but were unable to purchase tickets.
“To everyone who spent the evening refreshing screens, waiting in that queue and still didn’t manage to get tickets — I am so sorry, and so grateful that you wanted to be there with us. We see you. We hear you.”
And there may yet be another chapter.
“There have already been approaches and conversations about taking Puteri Gunung Ledang the Musical beyond this season, including interest from other parts of Malaysia. Nothing is confirmed and right now, our absolute focus is on delivering an extraordinary show. But after seeing this response, of course we have to seriously explore what more might be possible.”
For now, Tiara says the extraordinary public response has given the entire company an even greater sense of responsibility as rehearsals continue.
“People have given us their trust. Now it is our turn to earn it. We cannot wait to welcome everyone back to Ledang.”
