
Kota Kinabalu: Institut Sinaran and the Sabah Department of Fisheries jointly organised the Interschool Environment Day with some 200 students from secondary schools, here, last Saturday.
“One Earth, One Ocean” is this year’s theme which focuses on transformative changes to policies and choices to enable cleaner, greener and sustainable living in harmony with the ocean.
Principal Assistant Director of the Management Division Resources and Conservation from the Department of Fisheries, Dr Norasma Dacho, stressed that caring and protecting the environment starts with us.
“Individually, we are one drop but together, we are an ocean capable of making significant impact for the betterment of our environment,” she said in her closing speech.
Students participated in various activities held on campus which included the Environmental Video Contest, inviting students to submit a two-minute video on the theme.
The Environment Adventure Games, which was a race against time to collect the highest number of points by completing games and challenges prepared by Institut Sinaran students.
An Environmental Talk by the Department of Fisheries, Sabah, about its role in contributing towards the preservation and sustainability of the environment, as well as an Environmental Quiz run using a digital platform.
The closing ceremony was held at the college’s sixth floor auditorium with Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School winning champion for the Environmental Video Contest, SMK Tebobon winning champion for the Environment Adventure Games, and SMK St Francis Convent winning champion for the Environmental Quiz.
Institut Sinaran Student Council members, who were part of the organising committee together with lecturers and staff, had a strong conviction that drove them to put relentless time and effort into the preparation of the Interschool Environment Day.
“We care about our environment and so we are here to educate ourselves as well as our juniors to save this planet from climate change and all the other issues that are destroying our world,” is their motto.
The Joint Event was initiated and crystallised by Business Lecturer Roger Beliku with senior management leadership support from Academic Director Angie Chau Siew Kun.
Organised by Institut Sinaran and the Department of Fisheries, Sabah, the event was also sponsored by Institut Sinaran alumni from the Diploma in Commerce programme as well as Vico and Ayam Brands.
