KUCHING – Sarawak will upgrade its sports facilities, including building a velodrome here, as it prepares to host the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma).
Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said that, as the host of the country’s biggest sporting event, the state is ready to provide all other facilities required.
“(Construction of the) velodrome must be done as quickly as possible…(we already have) the others (sports facilities and amenities); (they) only need some upgrading,” he told reporters after officiating the Borneo International Garden Expo 2023, here, today.
Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that Sarawak will host the 2024 Sukma after chairing the Sukma Supreme Committee meeting yesterday.
The 2024 Sukma will see Sarawak becoming the host for the third time after the 1990 and 2016 editions.
Meanwhile, Abang Johari said the state government also wants 2024 Sukma’s impact to be felt throughout Sarawak and not just limited to Kuching.
“We want to involve other areas in Sarawak…perhaps boxing can be held in Sri Aman and badminton in Sibu. We also want to involve Miri,” he added. – Bernama, March 17, 2023
