A Malaysian woman has reached out for help after discovering that her son plans to travel to China to meet a girlfriend he met online.

According to Malaysian philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, better known as Uncle Kentang, the woman approached him fearing her son could be lured to the Chinese border and sold to scam centres or criminal syndicates.

Desperate efforts to block the departure

The woman reportedly tried to stop her 20-year-old son from leaving, but he remained adamant and argued with her. Left with no other option, she filed a police report in the hope of preventing him from departing the country. However, she was referred to the Malaysian Immigration Department.

Upon visiting the immigration office in Putrajaya, she was informed that a court order is required to legally bar an individual from travelling.

The burden of evidence

Uncle Kentang stated in a Facebook post:

“A mother lodged a police report as she suspects her 20-year-old son has been scammed and is heading to China to meet his social media girlfriend.

“She believes he may have been lured to the border near Laos and could be sold to scam centres or syndicates.”

He added that after she contacted a lawyer to apply for a court order, she was told that no legal representative could proceed without a valid, evidence-based reason. According to the lawyer, mere suspicion of human trafficking or a scam is insufficient for the court to issue such an order.

Uncle Kentang has made a public appeal to intervene before the young man leaves.

“Can someone please help? Can someone save this young man? He is from Johor Bahru and is adamant about meeting his ‘girlfriend’. If you know anyone who can stop him from leaving, please call me at 018 2683999,” he pleaded.
