Malaysian driver found with suitcases filled with drugs claims they weren’t his

According to Berita Harian, police stopped the vehicle at a roadblock in Hua Hin at around 12:30 AM on 8 August after receiving information that a vehicle carrying a large quantity of drugs would be passing through the area.

When the BMW with Bangkok-registered number plates approached the roadblock, the driver allegedly attempted to evade it, prompting police to give chase. Officers eventually caught up with the vehicle and stopped it near a convenience store.

“Police officers then pursued the vehicle and managed to stop it outside a convenience store near Hua Hin Grand. The 20-year-old driver, who is a Malaysian national, was subsequently arrested,” a Thai security spokesperson said.

Police also found several suitcases inside the vehicle. However, the suspect reportedly told officers that the suitcases did not belong to him and that he did not know the combination to open them.

Police then took the suspect and the vehicle back to the roadblock, where officers conducted a search with the suspect’s consent.

“Checks found that the suitcases contained a total of 166kg of crystal methamphetamine. The vehicle was also seized as evidence,” he said.

Further investigations are underway

Thai police found that the drugs were not meant to be distributed in Hua Hin, but were allegedly being transported to Hat Yai and three other provinces in southern Thailand.

“The shipment was allegedly ordered by a Chinese national based in Bangkok who was involved in illegal business activities. The individual allegedly instructed a courier to deliver the drugs to a designated location,” he said.

Further investigations into the suspected drug trafficking network are still ongoing.
