A Chinese tourist’s trip to Bali, Indonesia, ended in tragedy after she collapsed with severe vomiting and chills at her accommodation in Canggu.

Meanwhile, 10 others were rushed to the hospital following a suspected mass poisoning at a USD9-a-night (~RM37.50) hostel that had already been criticised for a bed bug infestation.

She was found half-naked and unresponsive in her room

The 25-year-old victim, identified as Ms Y, was found half-naked and unresponsive in her bunk around 11 AM on 2 September, and was later pronounced dead, according to the Daily Mail.

Her friend, who shared the same room, spent 5 days in intensive care fighting for her life, but thankfully survived.

Ms Y’s room was sealed off following her death

Leila Li, the friend, said Ms Y had been too sick to get up or call for help, lying in her bunk and vomiting for hours while other guests rushed around trying to get assistance.

“I managed to ask for help and was taken to a medical centre three times before they finally called an ambulance for me. I asked them to get a doctor for Ms Y, and when I got to the hospital, I even messaged her to go in too, but I never got a reply.”

“I want to warn people so this doesn’t happen to them”

Li is calling for the hostel to be shut down until a full investigation into the tragedy is completed.

“They’re trying to cover it up, and I just want to warn people so this doesn’t happen to anyone else. More than 20 people suffered from collective poisoning, at least ten were in critical condition, and one person died,” she said.

Ms Y’s cause of death was listed as acute gastroenteritis and hypovolemic shock, but the exact source of the poisoning is still unknown.

Li also said that Ms Y had mentioned the bedbug fumigation during dinner the night before her death, after noticing that a nearby room had been closed off.

She pointed out that while everyone assumed they had fallen ill from “Bali Belly” after eating together that night, her hospital tests revealed something far more serious.

“My doctor confirmed it was both pesticide poisoning and food poisoning. I went to the medical centre three times, and each time I felt better, but when I went back to my room to rest, the symptoms came back,” Li added.

Li also said she has been contacted by recent tourists from Australia, Europe, and Asia who experienced similar symptoms after staying at the hostel.
