On May 1, 2024, at approximately 6:30 PM, the Criminal Investigation Division of the Pekan District Police Headquarters in Pahang arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of riding a stolen motorcycle which was being investigated under Section 379A of the Penal Code.

He tested positive for morphine
Royal Police Malaysia released a statement revealing how during the arrest of the man, a urine screening test was conducted, which returned a positive result for morphine. The suspect was remanded for 3 days, from May 2 to May 4, 2024, at the Pekan District Police Headquarters.
Fast forward to May 4th, the Criminal Investigation Unit and Death in Custody from the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department Bukit Aman has conducted an investigation into a reported death of the said detainee in police custody.

The cause of death was determined to be hanging
On the day itself, the medical officer at Pekan Hospital in Pahang confirmed that the detainee had passed away. They did an autopsy at Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital in Kuantan, and it turned out that the cause of death was hanging.
Right now, the case is classified as sudden death, and the Criminal Investigation Unit and the Death in Custody (USJKT) from the Integrity and Compliance Standards Department (JIPS) Bukit Aman are still looking into it from different angles before they send their findings to the coroner.

Additionally, this case was referred to the Independent Commission for Police Conduct (IPCC) on May 4, 2024, within 24 hours, in compliance with Section 26 of the Independent Commission for Police Conduct (Act 839).
A follow-up was made on May 7, 2024, within 7 days, alongside periodic reports to monitor and assess the investigation’s progress.
