27 Likas Hosp guards lodge labour complaint

Kota Kinabalu: A total of 27 security guards at Likas Hospital have lodged a complaint with the Sabah Labour Department (JTK) over alleged issues involving rest breaks, overtime and staff welfare.

Their representative, Shamri Matnoor, told the Daily Express that the formal complaint was lodged against their employer, a security company, on Aug 11 following unsuccessful negotiations.

He said the guards were entitled to a three-hour break during each 12-hour shift under their contract, but alleged they were still required to perform their duties during the break.

They also raised concerns over difficulties attending Friday prayers due to the lack of relief guards to take over their posts.

Shamri said the group was prepared to submit relevant documents, including employment contracts, shift schedules and duty rosters, to the Labour Department for investigation.

He also urged the authorities to audit claims involving attendance records and payment issues. The guards called for appropriate action against those responsible, saying their wages were essential for supporting their families and meeting daily expenses.

“Where is the rule that allows working overtime without pay? What about our welfare when we need to settle payments and meet the living costs of our wives and children?” he asked.

Shamri also urged the management to address their concerns and called on the authorities to take swift action.
