Kota Kinabalu: Joggers at the Likas track are warned against going near the lake’s edge or risk a crocodile attack.

Apparently there are three crocodiles lurking there and attempts to trap them using chicken carcass have been futile as monitor lizards would beat the crocodiles to the bait.

According to a Likas Stadium spokesperson, five warning signs have been placed around the lake, including two at a nearby golf driving range while more would be added soon.

“But the signage seems to serve only as a selfie prop. Many take selfies there like it’s a tourist attraction.

“Staff and security try to send away well-meaning fish feeders only to be met with hostile response.

“The Sabah Wildlife Department (SWD) have identified three crocodiles, two at the lake near the track and another at the golf range. One of them is about 10 feet long,” he told Daily Express.

The encroachment was noticed shortly after the Movement Control Order was lifted and the SWD’s expertise were immediately called.

However, not a single croc has been lured into any of the three traps. The chicken carcasses used as bait would be eaten by monitor lizards who would then make a sly escape.

“They come in from the mangrove area upstream. We believe they are the same ones that made an appearance at Likas Bay recently. We have identified their ‘hangout’ spot further up the lake. SWD staff will monitor the set traps in two to three day intervals but none have been captured so far,” he said.
