Three youths suffered burns to their body after they were electrocuted during a Nine Emperor God procession in Kedah last night (Oct 13).
According to Oriental Daily, the accident took place in front of a hypermarket in Mergong at around 8.45pm.
The Chinese daily reported that the youths were part of the flag performance team, where a sudden gust of wind caused a flag pole to veer off course and come in contact with a high-voltage power line.

This triggered a loud bang and sparks at the scene, as well as the youths being electrocuted. A gaping hole was even left in the tar road too.
Fortunately, there were ambulances and first responders being stationed at the scene and they immediately provided medical assistance to the youths before sending them to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital in Alor Setar for treatment.
Kota Darul Aman constituency coordinator Ooi Shou Wayne, who took part in the procession, told Oriental Daily that two of the three victims suffered severe injuries.

‘We take responsibility’
Meanwhile, Xie Wenchuan (transliteration), the secretary-general of the temple which organised the procession, said the victims are currently in a stable condition and being closely monitored.
He added that though the incident was purely accidental, he stressed that the temple management will take responsibility for the mishap.

“We will do everything possible to provide the necessary assistance and ensure the victims receive proper care. The temple management will also follow up on any further need for cooperation or assistance, as well as offer support to the victims and their families.”
Xie added that following the incident, the procession continued as usual but with tighter security and safety measures.
