One person, identified as Gursahib Singh of Dhanoe Kalan village under the Gharinda police station, has been arrested in connection with the recovery.
The police intercepted the suspect during a routine checking operation and conducted a search, leading to the recovery of the narcotics and the illegal firearm. He was taken into custody on the spot.
“The police received specific information that the accused was involved in drug peddling and was travelling on a motorcycle along the defence drain from Hardo Rattan village towards Attari,” said Nirvail Singh. Acting on the tip-off, the police set up a naka near Atalgarh village and intercepted the suspect. During the search, they recovered 1 kg of heroin and a China-made .30 bore pistol from his possession.
A case under the NDPS Act and the Arms Act has been registered against the accused and further investigation is underway. The police are probing the source of the heroin and the weapon and are also investigating whether the accused has links with an organised cross-border drug and arms smuggling network. Officials said efforts are underway to identify other persons involved in the supply chain, adding that further arrests and recoveries are expected.
