MERSING: Three SPM candidates from Kampung Orang Asli Punan were flown to SMK Nitar here in a fire and rescue department aircraft yesterday to sit for their examination.

Johor fire and rescue department’s acting director Rizal Buang said Norfaizal Selamat, Jefzulkiflie Addy and Christie Maurinissca Clay, all aged 18, were airlifted in an AgustaWestland AW189 helicopter for the flight from their kampung to the school.

He said they were supposed to sit for their science practical test on Monday, but it had to be postponed as the road to their settlement was still flooded.

However, the school agreed to allow them to sit for their papers yesterday, he told Bernama, adding that they would be staying at the hostel throughout the examination period.

As of noon today, the number of flood victims in four districts in Johor – Mersing, Batu Pahat, Kota Tinggi and Segamat – stood at 1,373.

According to the education ministry, 403,637 candidates are sitting for the 2022 SPM examination from Jan 30 to March 15.
