PRIVATE limited companies operating private educational institutions (IPS) under the Ministry of Education (MOE) are no longer required to maintain a minimum of 30 percent Bumiputera equity ownership.
In a statement today, the MOE announced that this decision was reached following discussions with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI).
"This adjustment was made to meet the current needs of the education sector and to ensure that opportunities for participation in education remain open to all parties wishing to contribute to the nation's educational development," the statement read.
The MOE acknowledged the concerns raised regarding the requirement for at least 30 percent Bumiputera equity ownership for certain IPS owned by private limited companies — a stipulation originally outlined in the Private Education Institutions Policy Book published in 2006.
The Ministry also expressed appreciation for the contributions of all IPS operators and pledged to continue collaborating with all stakeholders for the benefit of Malaysian children's education.
Yesterday, the MOE announced plans to submit a proposal to the Cabinet next week to review regulations concerning tuition centre ownership, following concerns raised about the 30 per cent Bumiputera equity requirement.
