KUALA LUMPUR – Police are in pursuit of a suspect linked to the theft of 30 urns containing human ashes from a Nilai memorial park, reported missing on 26 February.

Nilai District Police Chief Supt Johari Yahya said the memorial park’s management received messages via WhatsApp from a foreign number, with the sender claiming to have found the missing urns.

“The suspect then demanded payment as a condition to return the recovered urns. Police are intensifying efforts to trace the individual involved and are examining the communication network used in this case.

“The investigation involves cross-border communication and digital technology, so the police are seeking technical assistance from relevant agencies to aid the inquiry,” he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft in a building, Section 384 for extortion, and Section 297 for trespassing in a burial ground.

Authorities urged the public not to speculate, which could hinder the investigation, and to allow the police to conduct a thorough inquiry. — March 17, 2026
