
Expressing concern over the growing problem of drug abuse in Ladakh, officials said 31 drug dependence cases have been registered at the Drug De-Addiction Centre (DDAC), Leh, this year, of which 28 patients have successfully completed treatment.
Speaking during the concluding programme of ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Saptah 2026’, DDAC Manager-cum-Incharge Nilza Angmo said three beneficiaries are currently undergoing treatment.
She said regular follow-up counselling sessions and medical check-ups are conducted every week or within ten days to ensure sustained recovery. She also appreciated members of the YATO Club, comprising students from different schools, for actively spreading awareness against substance abuse.
The DDAC, functioning under the Social and Tribal Welfare Department, organised the concluding programme at the DC Conference Hall in observance of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
District Social Welfare Officer Mohd Safdar Bhat spoke about the causes, prevention and impact of drug abuse on individuals, families and society. He highlighted government initiatives to combat substance abuse and urged students to become ambassadors of the anti-drug campaign by promoting healthy lifestyles.
Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Padma Angmo of SNM Hospital observed that substance abuse among youth is increasing and called for stronger preventive interventions and wider public awareness. She stressed the need for stronger family bonds and open communication between parents and children while appreciating the efforts of the District De-Addiction Centre.
During the interaction, DDAC staff also highlighted the issue of pending salaries for the past seven months. Speech and painting competitions involving students from various educational institutions were also organised.
