A pack of stray dogs attacked a daily wager in Khanna, district Ludhiana, late on Tuesday night. The labourer tried to defend himself, but the dogs’ bit him severely. The incident came to light today morning and has caused panic among the residents of the area.
The deceased was identified as Ram Ishwar (35).
The incident occurred at night when Ram had gone to the fields and was attacked by a pack of 10-15 stray dogs. The victim’s brother said their father found Ram Ishwar’s body in the fields on Wednesday morning with dogs scavenging it. He immediately raised an alarm and villagers rushed over, chasing the dogs away, but Ram Ishwar had already died by then.
The residents alleged that since the garbage dump was built near the village, the number of dogs had increased in the area. They blame the Municipal Council of Khanna for the situation.
Farmers and villagers said the situation has deteriorated to the point where people must carry sticks or other weapons. They can’t imagine to cross the road near dump during night without carrying sticks and they are even forced to live in fear even during the day.
The residents demanded that the government and administration should deploy special teams to relocate the stray dogs, get the garbage dump removed and that the deceased’s family be given adequate compensation.
