Negeri Sembilan has a total population of 1,199,974 according to the OpenDOSM census data.
Voter turnout in the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election reached 65.38%, with 562,133 of the 859,760 registered voters having cast their ballots as of 4 pm on 1 Aug 2026.
In the election on 1 Aug 2026, BN / UMNO won 18 seats followed by PN with 7 seats and PH with 11 seats.
BN obtained a total of 227,067 votes while PN obtained 130,407 votes and PH obtained 256,386 votes
Following this, BN and PN agreed to form the new Negeri Sembilan state government and on 2 Aug 2026, Datuk Ismail Lasim from UMNO was sworn in as the 12th Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan.
Being appointed as the Menteri Besar means the candidate must have the support of most state assemblymen for the Yang di-Pertuan Besar to appoint him.
As politicians always maintained and claimed that they work for the people i.e the voters, in essence, 357,469 voters (227,062 + 130,407) agreed and supported the assemblymen they voted for on 1 Aug 2026 for them to support and agreed for Datuk Ismail Lasim from UMNO to be appointed as the Mentri Besar.
On 8 Sept 2026, at a press conference, Undang Yang Empat, produced a document, dated 3 Aug 2026, allegedly showing that Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim had signed a proclamation to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.
The document stated, among other things: “In fulfilment of the requirements of Article 10(2) of the Constitution of the Government of Negri Sembilan 1959 and for the purpose of implementing the provision, I, as the Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan, hereby affix my signat
ure as set out below.”
On 9 Sept 2026, the Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim acknowledged he did signed a document presented by the state's traditional chieftains, claimed he acted under duress and a police report was filed by him on the said matter.
Be that as it may, once the Mentri Besar, who was voted in by 357,469 voters in Negeri Sembilan on 1 Aug 2026 to represent them, signed the said document to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan, it seems to suggest that 357,469 voters in Negeri Sembilan agreed and supported the actions of the Mentri Besar i.e remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan.
Slightly more than 30% of the total registered voters, through the actions of the Mentri Besar who signed the proclamation to remove Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir as the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan agreed with the actions of the Mentri Besar they voted in.
