A 36-year-old man in Ningbo, China, tragically lost his life after diving headfirst into a pool while his seven-year-old daughter looked on.

The incident, which occurred on 18 October at an indoor pool, saw the man remain face down and motionless, as lifeguards reportedly mistook him for playing with his daughter and didn’t initiate a rescue.

The pool was only 1.1 metres deep

Not realising the pool was only 1.1m deep, the victim, identified as Hu, dove into the shallow water and hit his head on the pool floor, fracturing his cervical vertebrae.

According to ET Today, his daughter, who was in the pool at the time, quickly tried to pull her father up after noticing he wasn’t moving.

He was rushed to the hospital after a lifeguard spotted that something was wrong, but sadly, he later died from his injuries.

He remained motionless in the water for about 16 minutes

After Hu’s death, his family announced plans to sue the gym where the pool was located, blaming the staff for their slow response.

They claimed that the on-site staff failed to act quickly, delaying the rescue by around 16 minutes, and said Hu had suffered a fractured cervical vertebra after diving.

The gymnasium’s management, however, defended itself, saying it was not primarily responsible for the man’s death but would cooperate with the investigation and take responsibility where necessary.
