
THIRTY-eight people including children and the elderly escaped unhurt when a fire swept through their longhouse last night in Sibu.
Longhouse Rumah Gamang in Sibu, central Sarawak was razed to the ground in the 8pm incident.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department said all the 38 people living in the wooden building managed to escape unhurt.
"Our Bomba stations in Sungai Merah and Sibu Central rushed their teams to the site after an emergency alert.
"The building was already engulfed in flames when the fire teams arrived.
"Information from the villagers revealed there were 38 people living there and all managed to escape the fire," the department said in a statement.
The cause of the fire is being probed while the welfare authorities have been alerted to the plight of the homeless victims. - June 17, 2025
