A 38-year-old man appeared in Magistrate’s Court after being charged with killing his brother-in-law in a gruesome manner on 31 October in Kedah.
As previously reported, he attacked his 45-year-old brother-in-law, fatally injuring him and severing his head in the process.
The victim’s head was found a metre away from his body
The victim was later found by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) lying in a paddy field, with his head about a metre away from his body.
According to Sinar Harian, the suspect was arrested inside his house after around 15 minutes of persuasion, still holding a machete.
A urine test on the suspect came back negative for drugs, but his family said he has mental health issues.
The accused is facing the death penalty
In a recent update on the case, the accused, Mohd Faizal Awang, nodded in understanding after the charge was read to him by Magistrate Nor Syaliati Mohd Sobri.
He is accused of killing Nasir Md Nayan in the paddy field area of Kampung Pida 3, Tunjang, between 6:30 PM and 7:00 PM on 31 October.
Mohd Faizal now faces the death penalty under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries either the death sentence or 30 to 40 years in prison, along with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane if convicted.

The prosecution was headed by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nasruna Anhar Nordien, while the accused was not represented by a lawyer.
The court has set 12 January for a case mention to obtain chemical and forensic reports, and bail was not granted.
